As students transition into summer, keep the spark for reading alive! In this class, students will read a variety of books from diverse authors. In our weekly gatherings, there will be an opportunity to read aloud (strengthening fluency and confidence) as well as time to discuss and question what we have read (strengthening comprehension and critical thinking). In addition, students will be asked to expand on what they have read by finding ways to apply the themes within each book to their own lives.
In June we will read:
Maybe, Maybe Marisol Rainey by Erin Entrada Kelly
An illustrated novel about summer, friendship, and overcoming fears, told with warm humor and undeniable appeal.
In July we will read:
We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, illustrated by Michaela Goade
Inspired by the many Indigenous-led movements across North America, We Are Water Protectors issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth's water from harm and corruption.
Kamala and Maya's Big Idea by Meena Harris, illustrated by Ana Ramírez González
A beautiful, empowering picture book about two sisters who work with their community to effect change, inspired by a true story from the childhood of the author's aunt, Kamala Harris, and mother, lawyer, and policy expert Maya Harris.
